HAPPY KRISHNA JANMASTHAMI
It is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Krishna. Krishna was born in a tense historical period preceding a devastating war. The warring factions built up so many weapons that the burden on the earth became unbearable. Finally the goddess of the earth took the form of a cow and prayed to Lord Brahma for relief. Lord Brahma called all the demigods to the shore of the Milk Ocean to hear Mother Earth and to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma fell into trance reciting the Vedic hymns known as the Purusa-sukta and heard the voice of Lord Vishnu. Then he announced, “O demigods hear from me the words of God. He is aware of the distress on earth and wants you demigods to incarnate as sons and daughters in the Yadu dynasty. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna, will personally appear as the son of Vasudeva. Therefore, you will all have the benediction of joining the eternal pastimes of Lord Krishna.”
He was born in prison in Mathura. However, his birthday is not clearly known, but he was born on the eight day of the dark fortnight at the stroke of midnight in the month of Bhadon .He lived for approx. 125 years. His parents Vasudev & Devki belonged to Mathura; the capital of Yadavas that days. King Kansa, Devki’s brother has ascended the throne by imprisoning his father, King Ugrasen. Afraid of a prophecy that predicted his death at the hands of Devki’s eighth son, Kansa had locked the couple in a prison cell. After Kansa killed the first six children and Devki’s apparent miscarriage of the seventh (which was actually a secret transfer of the infant to Rohini as Balram) Krishna was born.
Following the birth, Vishnu ordered Vasudeva to take Krishna to Gokul where he could live safely with his uncle Nanda.Vasudev took Krishna with him and crossed the Yamuna to reach Gokul. There; everyone was asleep, so he quietly kept him there and returned with Yashoda’s daughter. Kansa thinking her to be Devki’s eighth children threw her on a stone. She rose into the air and transformed into yogmaya (Vishnu”s helper) and warned Kansa about his death. Then Krishna grew up in Gokul with his brother Balram. There is a vast story of his childhood. He then returned to Mathura and killed Kansa with the help of Balram.
Janmashtmi is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm in different parts of India. Krishna loved butter very much and he was known as Makhan Chor (butter thief). The child-god Krishna and his friends used to form human pyramids to break pots hung from the ceilings of neighboring houses, in order to steal curd and butter. This was in Vrindavan, a village in Uttar Pradesh, India, where Krishna was brought up. There were ample amount of cows and milk products made that time. He used to distribute it among his friends because during King Kansa’s rule (his maternal uncle), their parents were forced to give everything produced to Kansa’s home in Mathura. The children of Vrindavan village were thus deprived of milk products.
Dahi Handi or Matki Fod activity is also done on this day in many places. This event is based on the legend of the child-god Krishna stealing butter. It involves making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot filled with curd tied at a convenient/difficult height. It is mostly popular in the state of Maharashtra and Mumbai. However, it is celebrated in the other parts of the country also. It is part of the main festival Gokulashtami, which is known as Krishna Janmashtami in the rest of the country.
Janmasthami is celebrated in most of the temples in India & abroad also. The temples are decorated with flowers & colorful strips & balloons. The Bal Krishna’s idol is being placed in “payna” (cradle) and it is decorated. Krishna aarti is done at the stroke of midnight & everybody shouts with joy “NAND GHER AANAND BHAYO, JAY KANHAIYA LAL KI “Prasad of panjiri (a mixture of dhaniya powder, butter, sugar & dry fruits) is distributed among the devotees. The devotees release the fast by taking panjiri.
